Here are the various products that Surfacex uses to create a concrete floor covering that will be solid, durable and aesthetically pleasing.

PREPARATION STEPS FOR COATING A FLOOR OR A CONCRETE SURFACE

1 Preparing the concrete floor

Evaluating the condition of the concrete slab
As a first step, it is important for us to evaluate the concrete’s condition in order to determine the preparation and repairs needed before resurfacing.

  • Measuring the moisture content of the concrete
  • Checking whether the concrete is grease-free. If not, cleaning the surface with a degreaser.

2 Scarifying the concrete surface

We then use a diamond grinder to physically scarify the surface. This step is necessary for any type of concrete: it roughens the concrete surface so that the polymer can adhere to it. In addition, grinding removes all traces of laitance, surface grease, oil, dirt, residues, wax, black glue, ceramic glue, foreign objects, coatings, flakes, dye and paint.

3 Ball shot blasting

This very step is necessary in the case a membrane or a 1/8 inches or more coating is applied in order to create a bigger anchoring. It’s also necessary when the coating will be exposed to heavy traffic.

4 Application of an expoxydic primer or polymer concrete

This step is necessary for porous surfaces like those with damaged concrete and those located within basements (because of moisture). Expoxydic primer is used to seal the concrete slab properly. It’s applied in more dry and heavy layers in 24 hours.

5 Epoxy application options

One or many epoxy layers will be applied, according to your needs. The application is made with a scraper or a roller. We can add aluminum oxide or silica sand to obtain a non-slip finish. Epoxy is recommended for living areas like condos, basements or offices. We apply a lot of transparent epoxy for that kind of surface. Coloured epoxy is recommended for factory or warehouse flooring. It’s the most resistant product for heavy traffic.

that system is strongly recommended for garage floor coating, but it’s also appropriate for any commercial surfaces like kitchens, cafeterias, commercial enterprises, pharmaceutical laboratories and health facilities. We’re currently redoing kitchen flooring for restaurants such as Barbie’s and for Groupe Maurice. You can also see our flooring works at Mondou animal feed shops or for Place Ville Marie passageways.

6 Transparent polymer application

The transparent coating we’re applying at the end of the floor finishing process seals the vinyl chunks (if option chosen), protects the coloured polymer and gives a glossy finish to the floor surface. It could be made out of epoxy, polyurethane or polycarbamide. For the residential sector, we recommend polycarbamide because it won’t change color and it can be applied in heavy layers. Polyaspartic applied in heavy layers becomes white, so it’s not recommended for residential purposes, unless it’s applied in very thin layers. We’ll be happy to advise you on the optimal option for your project.
